Research-based. This instructional model
has its historical roots in the research done in the late
1960's by federal grants under the McComb commission whose
charge was to design a way to increase the reading achievement
of inner-city, minority students. Top educators from across
the nation pooled their talents and available research in
this endeavor, resulting in significant academic gains measured
on the students served.
Utilizing a background in Bio-Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Reading,
Melinda Crenwelge, owner of Academics Plus, developed the
instructional program used by Academics Plus which maintains
the four primary areas the research originally suggested.
Current research was utilized to substantially increase the
verbal development and higher order thinking skills of the
students. This is supported by Put Reading First: The
Research Building Blocks for Teaching Children to Read
by the Center for Improvement of Early Reading Achievement
(CIERA). It describes the findings of the National Reading
Panel Report in five areas of reading instruction: phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text-comprehension.
Instruction in the Academics Plus program focuses upon the
remediation of the deficient skills of each student. Instead
of emphasizing phonics, whole language or any other of several
legitimate teaching methods exclusively, the Academics Plus
system utilizes the combination of techniques and methods
that best helps each child acquire and master deficient skills.
The program is a learner-based rather than a pre-determined,
content-based program.
Specifically Designed to Increase Academic Proficiency
of Students.
The Academics Plus program prescribes an individualized learning
program customized for each child's success on the state's
academic achievement standards. It is monitored in a manner
to assure that each student receives the precise instructional
content delivered in the optimal learning modality at the
correct level of difficulty each and every hour of instruction.
A maximum 3:1 student-to-teacher ratio and a close working
relationship with classroom teachers assures the transfer
of knowledge gained into the large group instructional setting
found in the classroom. Extensive communication with parents/caregivers
and classroom teachers assures that every student is improving
both classroom performance and achievement.
The program causes students to be proficient, thinking readers
who are able to perform successfully without unnecessary emphasis
on test preparation.
